Helping Seniors Age Safely at Home!
ESAC is dedicated to ensuring the stability of neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for our most vulnerable residents.
Our Senior Assistance Programs provide a client centered approach to help seniors who may need a variety of supports to stabilize their homes and help them age in place. Through ESAC, seniors can access valuable resources and services that can improve their lives on a daily basis. Most, but not all programs are geared to low and moderate income seniors living in Boston.
Falls Prevention Program:
One in three seniors fall each year, resulting in hospitalizations or worse.
ESAC’s Home Repair Specialist assesses the home and works with seniors to identify falls risk areas. We then make the needed modifications including grab bars, railings, floors and step repairs (inside and out). In one home, ESAC removed all the thresholds that posed a trip hazard to a senior who shuffled. We provide these services throughout Boston and expect to complete more than 600 modifications this year! Any homeowner 55 years or older (or a person of any age with a disability) can receive this service.
Benefits Enrollment Center:
Many seniors or persons with disabilities are not aware of programs that help with insurance deductibles and co-pays, nutrition support and fuel assistance. ESAC can help seniors determine if they are eligible for benefits and help them to apply. This income support can make a big difference in ensuring seniors remain at home as long as it is safe to do so. Both owners and renters aged 65+ can benefit from this program.
Home Modification Loan Program (HMLP):
With affordable loans for accessibility improvements seniors can plan to live in their homes longer.
Typical improvements include walk-in tubs, stair lifts, ramps – even a new accessible bathroom can be added into a home. To work with ESAC, you must be an owner of a 1-4 family home, have a documented ambulatory deficit and make less than $144,800 for a house-hold size of one and up to $165,600 for a household size of two. This program is funded by the Mass Rehab Council through CEDAC and Boston Metro Housing.
Home Repair for Seniors and Disabled Persons:
90% of seniors want to age at home, but emergency repairs and deferred maintenance can threaten their security, making them vulnerable to home improvement scams.
• ESAC provides minor carpentry and plumbing repairs for little or no cost - we do more than 500 each year!
• ESAC assists with applications to the Boston Home Center for a no-interest, deferred payment loan to replace roofs, siding, porches and windows, or upgrade kitchens and baths.
• ESAC provides on call emergency services for heat issues and similar urgent matters. Seniors call 311 for the Boston Resident Ser-vices Hotline, who then contact ESAC to provide assistance.
Now more than ever, seniors are suffering the burden of the high cost of homeownership due to increasing property taxes, insurance, and/or high mortgage payments.
Through ESAC’s Mortgage Assistance Program, seniors can meet with ESAC’s trained housing counselor to learn about all the options available to them. ESAC creates a manageable household budget by ensuring the homeowner is accessing benefits available to them, such as property tax exemptions/deferrals, and by working with mortgage lenders to arrive at modified monthly payments that are more affordable. This service is available to all homeowners (including non-seniors), even those current on their taxes/loans. Of course, any-one who is already behind on their mortgage, in default or threatened with foreclosure should CALL ESAC IMMEDIATELY.
