A Message from Norma

Upon returning from the memorable "March on Washington" in August 1963, I wrote to my parents describing the event. I ended with "and now it remains to share with all the people I meet the fruits of this trip." That watershed day has remained with me ever since, and what I witnessed has directed my volunteer efforts, and later my professional career fighting for justice, justice for all people regardless of race, age, infirmity, poverty and financial distress, personal and marital setbacks, and health problems. That fight has evolved from my "wildeyed" radical days to a more modern day moderated approach. But my commitment has been uncompromising, my dedication steadfast.

As an English major from Radcliffe, nothing had prepared me for my involvement in housing advocacy. I just knew how important having a place to call home was and is. I was idealistic enough to think I could overcome any obstacles to achieve justice for those who were threatened with the loss of their homes, early on with tenants, and for the last 25 years with homeowners. To achieve this I learned to bring people together to build consensus around common, pressing issues. One of my proudest achievements was the formation of the Community Housing Task Force. The CHTF provided me with an opportunity not only to meet and converse with representatives from the diverse industries, organizations, and agencies, both public and private, but also to cement relationships with those representatives who were and still are vital in spearheading policies and programs which promote sustainable, affordable housing.

Now, as I reflect back on 37 years in the trenches, in the work-place and in the board rooms, I realize that the most rewarding lessons learned I gained from the people with whom I worked; as clients and colleagues, advocates and adversaries; with those who spread the message and those who have yet to hear the message. It was they who gave me the strength to fight and fight and fight for what is just, right and equitable. My thanks to you and to all whom would carry on that fight.
