Remembering Norma

“Norma worked tirelessly and fearlessly to make things work for people. It was through her vision that we created the homeownership center at ESAC. She understood how important a stable and secure home was to all families.”

Robert Pulster
Executive Director
ESAC

Norma Mosely, our friend, colleague and inspiration, died on Saturday, September 16.  She was admitted to the hospital Friday with pneumonia, and was unable to fight off the infection.  Her family was with her when she died.

Norma embodied the spirit of ESAC, and was its moral compass for many years.  Her dedication to helping low income families and seniors is legend and her creativity and tenacity brought about systemic changes and model programs that will continue on in her absence.  Norma was one of a kind - full of righteous anger one moment and grinning impishly the next.  She will be sorely missed by so many.

Emily Morris Litonjua
President
ESAC Board of Directors

I am very sorry to hear of Norma's passing.  It is a great loss to the community and she will be missed by many.  She was a wonderful person and her legacy will live on.

Karen Hibbert
ESAC Board member

It is indeed sad news about Norma's passing.  She was definitely one of a kind and someone who we will all miss.

ESAC Board member

It is very sad to hear about Norma.  I did not know her personally but I have heard so much about her kindness, generosity and wonderful spirit and know how much she contributed to ESAC over the years.  Please extend my deepest sympathy to her family and all the ESAC staff members who worked so closely with her.  I know that she meant a lot to you.  Please accept my
condolences for the loss of your cherished friend.

I was truly fond of Norma.  I worked with her on many projects while at Shawmut and at the Division of Banks.  She was a true trooper and cared for those she worked with more then anyone I know.

Catherine Jones
Division of Banks

She was simply inspiring.  One doesn't come across a hero like Norma very often.

My thoughts are with you and with her family.  Norma will truly be missed. She helped so many people, she will never be forgotten.

During the 11 years that I worked in partnership with ESAC, Norma was a constant North star for me.  She truly represented what it means to live one's values for the long haul.  I thank her for being an inspiration.  Somehow the thought of "resting" in peace does not fit her --may she instead shine for peace and justice in eternity.

We will miss Norma's guidance and wisdom but her spirit will continue to inspire and energize us to help distressed homeowners in need.

I first met Norma when I worked as an intern at Columbia-Savin Hill Neighorhood Housing Services in 1975 and have been her friend ever since. Norma always gave so freely of herself to others, no matter what the cost. I will miss her passion for justice and what is right and fair, her twinkling eyes, and her hearty laugh.  Her caring for the most vulnerable people is matched only by her love for animals.  I remember her pride the day she told me that the "F." in Norma F. Moseley stood for her maiden name which was the German word for the little bird, the finch.  So now our little bird has flown from us, but not before leaving a legacy of love and wisdom. Rest in peace Norma.

Norma was an inspiration to work with and her passion for justice and dignity for the underserved was unparalled.

What amazed me most about Norma was that she never lost her sense of outrage. You'd think anyone who'd seen banks mistreat thousands of people would get hardened to it.  She was as angry about the 2000th as she had been about the first.  And that inspired us all.

Marcia C. Peters

Norma was one of those very special people who cared so deeply about righting wrongs in our world that she used her enormous energy and dedication to 'comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable' in all her waking hours...or so I believe!  I think she even thought about it in her sleep...  She was a creative and caring thinker and spirit.  I worked with her over many years on the Massachusetts Community & Banking Council (MCBC) board.  I will especially remember her for being the inspiration for the 'Borrowing Trouble' campaign that aimed to prevent home buyers from putting themselves at risk.  We supported each other and argued too, all with great passion, because our mission was the same, even if our approaches were sometimes different.  Many of us owe so much to Norma for her vision and her powerful dedication. We miss you, Norma, but I know your voice and vision will echo through all the work we do for a long time.

CRA Officer, Boston Private Bank

I was privleged to participate on the MCBC advisory board that included Norma Mosley in the review of Jim Campen's Changing Patterns XII. As a mortgtage banker my perspective often differed on the roll of subprime loans. There was a particular sentence I took objection to in the draft that Norma made very clear she liked. She said she had the sentence highlighted. I said I also had the sentence highlighted and we shared a quick laugh. Needless to say I stood corrected.

Norma was one of my favorite people and I will always be inspired by her spunk and feistiness. She was a true fighter for what was right and just and she helped so many people get out of really bad loans.  Hopefully she scared a lot lenders into doing the right thing too! We can all honor her memory by continuing the work we do.  I am so grateful I got to know Norma.  I will miss her.

This is a belated thank-you for the touching tribute to my mother. I'm so grateful to all the people at ESAC for making that happen. I'm so glad I went. It gave me great satisfaction and "closure". I was extremely pleased to see the turnout and was deeply moved by the stories and speeches given. My mother loved you all and loved her work. Please keep her dream alive. I know you will. Thank-you for everything.

Sincerely,
Sarah G. Wales

Dear ESAC staff and friends,

I want to express my gratitide for the lovely tribute you put on for my mother on June 14.  I was deeply moved by the words of her co-workers and the clients she served.  I am so very proud to be her daughter.  She stands as a reminder of how one person can truly make a difference and when we work together as a team to find solutions, we can really bring about monumental change.  Thank you once again for hosting Norma's tribute and giving me the opportunity to participate.

I've been a journalist for over 30 years and I really mean it when I say Norma was one of the true heroes -- an overused word but not in this case -- I encountered. So my wife and I are more than happy to honor Norma's work and the work of everyone else there. We're most grateful for what you do.
