Sustainable Homeownership Center - Safeguarding Homeownership
When Carolyn Nikkal suffered a head injury in an accident and needed help with the upkeep of her house in Jamaica Plain, she was glad that a handy man and his family wanted to move in with her. But the illegal addition that he started building onto her home while she was in the hospital was more that she bargained for. She was aghast when the city building inspectors shut down the work and she was left with a hole in the middle of her home.
Carolyn’s visiting nurse suggested that she might be eligible for help from ESAC. She called and got connected to ESAC’s Senior Home Repair
Manager, Tom Lynch, who “came to my rescue in shining armor.” ESAC developed a two-phase plan to get her home into shape so that she could continue to live there. Phase One, including substantial repairs and a new roof, is now complete. Carolyn is living in her home now, recovering from her recent hip replacement surgery. She is anxious to get started on Phase Two, removal of the mold that has been severe enough to cause her to develop asthma.
By helping eligible homeowners buy, keep and improve their homes, ESAC contributes to building stable and healthy communities. “The work was absolutely incredible. I would not have been able to salvage my home without ESAC,” Carolyn says.
