ESAC in Egelston Square - Building Community at the Peace Garden

Emotions ran high at the 4th Annual Lantern Vigil at the Egleston Square Peace Garden on Sunday, October 22, 2006. The solemn event coincided with the one year anniversary of the shooting death of 18 year old Kevin Garces of Roxbury and provided Kevin’s friends and family with a community forum to express their grief.

St Mary of the Angels’ choir, Groupo Angeles lifted the spirits of those gathered with a meditative and joyful selection of songs of hope and peace. As area youth lit a candle for each loved one passed from this earth, the glow of color brought warmth as these lights shined in the coming dusk.

The Egleston Square Peace Garden is a community gathering place that has helped the neighborhood come together in celebration of community. The Peace Garden’s path of peace honors youth lost to violence and individuals from Egleston Square who worked for peace and social justice.

The Egleston Square Peace Garden is supported by a collaboration of area residents and organizations including ESAC, Egleston Square Main Street, Egleston YMCA, St. Mary of the Angels, St. Mary of the Angels Peace Delegates, Urban Edge, Grace & Hope Mission and Rogerson Communities. Groupo Angeles of St. Mary’s of the Angels choir sing inspirational selections to bring the spirit of hope to this solemn occasion.
